I’ve spent the last few months… learning what I believe. Yes, I know that sounds strange. I was raised in a Christian household. And taught the Bible from a young age. But even a year ago, I couldn’t have clearly explained what Christians believe about salvation.
I have wandered my way into Reformed theology. Just from studying. And from listening to guys like RC Sproul and John MacArthur.
Here’s the essence of it…
The Five Solas are five short Reformation statements:
- Sola Scriptura — Scripture alone is the final authority.
- Sola Gratia — salvation is by grace alone.
- Sola Fide — justification is through faith alone.
- Solus Christus — Christ alone is the mediator and basis of salvation.
- Soli Deo Gloria — all glory belongs to God alone.
A simple way to remember them:
Scripture alone teaches that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone.
What excites me is how completely this puts salvation in God’s hands—and gives Him all the glory for it. My dad was very much into theology. I sure wish I could hear his thoughts on what I’m discovering.
